Shillong, Jul 8: Deiphibapynshngain L Mawnai and Daiaka Emigale Warjri , both of West Khasi Hills, have been selected for the New Area Development Programme (NADP)/Bihar zonal cricket academy team that will take part in an inter-zonal one-day tournament for U-19 girls.

The tournament will run from 16th to 25th July in Chennai, the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) said in a press release today.

The MCA “is extremely positive that this selection will give the much-needed impetus to girls’/women’s cricket in the state and is hopeful that schools will come forward to encourage the young cricketers,” the release, signed by MCA Honorary Secretary Naba Bhattacharjee, said.

Warjri and Mawnai have both played cricket for Meghalaya before, namely in an U-19 North East zone inter-state tournament last year.

The BCCI has raised match fees, the MCA stated, and players representing their state are to receive a minimum of Rs 50,000 in a season, besides travel, accommodation and allowances. The MCA is also ready to provide assistance to serious intervention by educational institutes and affiliated district associations to promote cricket, Bhattacharjee added.

Meanwhile, the MCA also announced that selectors have picked Akash Kumar Choudhury for an U-19 national camp to be conducted at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore from 30th July to 23rd August.

Choudhury’s selection is based on his consistent performances for NADP/Bihar in an inter-zonal cricket academy tournament, which concluded recently. Choudhury had been named vice-captain ahead of that event.
