Shillong, Nov 18: Meghalaya have reached the semifinals of the School Games Federation of India’s U-19 Football Tournament after winning all three of their group games, pre-quarterfinal and quarterfinal matches.
The Meghalaya boys will play Punjab in the last-four stage on Monday. The tournament is being held in Rajasthan.
In the quarterfinal Meghalaya beat New Delhi 1-0 with a 50th minute goal from Samborlang Ryntathiang. Badonkupar Marbaniang was named man-of-the-match.
The pre-quarter against Uttarakhand was a challenging affair with extra time required to separate the two teams after normal time ended 0-0. Marbaniang then put Meghalaya ahead in the 10th minute of extra time, with Ryntathiang doubling the lead in the 14th minute and the fixture ended 2-0. Belton Lartang was named man-of-the-match in this game.
In the group stage Meghalaya defeated West Bengal 2-1 (Lartang 35′, Rijiedskhem Sun 48′ the scorers), Kendriya Vidyalayas Sangathan 2-0 (Eugene Shylla 38′, Ksankupar Massar 45′) and Jammu & Kashmir 6-0 (Dawanchwa Challam 15′, Massar 20′, Robertson Khongriah 28′, Lartang 40′, Marbaniang 50′, own goal 58′).
