Shillong, Jan 23: Tynrai and Aeronation won the women’s and men’s titles, respectively, of the second edition of the Tyllilang Basketball League here yesterday.
There were 13 men’s teams and nine women’s taking part in the league, which began at the end of December. All the matches were played at Pearly Dew School in Jaiaw Laitdom.
The women’s final featured defending champions Coterie and Tynrai. The latter led in each quarter of the game.
At the start of the third quarter and with Tynrai leading 29-17, Coterie, however, used their experience to come back and were within six points of their opponents at the start of the fourth and final quarter, trailing by 29 points to 35. However, Tynrai held on and won the final 46-40.
Coterie won numerous free throws, but their conversion rate was poor. If they had more on target they could have, perhaps, held on to their title.
Unfortunately TSR couldn’t stick around for the men’s final, but it appears to have been a rollicking game of basketball, with Aeronation winning back to back titles by defeating Touchline Basketball Academy 73-53. It wasn’t a one-sided match, however, with both sides taking the lead on occasion before Aeronation stormed past Touchline at the end.
Despite the 20-point defeat, being runners-up was a big step up for Touchline, who had finished the 2017-18 edition in seventh place.
The champions teams both received Rs 30,000 in prize money.
