Shillong, Apr 16: Already out of contention to advance to the semifinals, Meghalaya took to the field today in a dead rubber against Goa in Group A of the Santosh Trophy in Ludhiana.

Donborlang Nongkynrih bagged the lead for Meghalaya after half an hour via a penalty, but Goa equalised before half time. Five-time champions Goa were then able to take the lead in the second half and won the match 2-1.

Goa and fellow five-timers Services had already qualified for the semifinals prior to today.

Meghalaya thus exit the competition with one win (against Odisha) and three defeats. They finished fourth in Group A out of the five teams, behind Services, Goa and Delhi.

It hasn’t been the best of runs for the Meghalaya team, but one hopes it will have been a good learning experience for the many young players who were in the squad.
