Second Division: Nongthymmai gain promotion after beating Jongksha on penalties

Shillong, Sep 13: Nongthymmai were given a run for their money but secured promotion to next season’s First Division after beating Jongksha 4-2 on penalties in the first semifinal of the Second Division at the JN Stadium here today.

Nongthymmai took a two-goal lead in the first half through Balanstar Taro (37′, 42′) but saw their lead evaporate as Jongksha scored two in the second half via Arshan Rynjah (60′) and Everest Kharsahnoh (76′).

The match then went straight to penalties with practically everyone in the stands on their feet (Jongksha fans easily outnumbered those of Nongthymmai). Here Nongthymmai captain and goalkeeper Founder Kharnaior blocked Jongksha twice as his team won 4-2.

Nongthymmai had topped Group A, while Jongksha were runners-up in Group B. Nongthymmai were the only unbeaten team across both groups.

The second semifinal between Group B toppers Laitkor and Group A runners-up Umphyrnai will take place tomorrow at 3:30PM.
