Shillong, Sep 17: Meghalaya, represented by H Elias Higher Secondary School, were crowned U-17 boys champions of the 60th anniversary Subroto Cup in New Delhi today by defeating Bangladesh Krira Shiksha Protisthan 1-0 in the final.

Sangti Janai Shianglong scored the lone goal late in the first half over last year’s champions.

After a good attack the ball fell to Shianglong, who took a shot from just inside the box. He aimed it for the top corner and the BKSP goalkeeper got a fingertip to it but couldn’t keep it out.

Meghalaya goalie Wanteilang Malngiang was tested twice in the first half but made excellent diving saves.

BKSP were reduced to nine players in the second half with two players getting red cards.

This was the first time that a Meghalaya school won the U-17 Subroto trophy since OM Roy did it in 2013.

As champions Meghalaya take home Rs 4 lakh as prize money.

Malngiang was named Best Goalkeeper, Shianglong Best Player and Meghalaya coach Bobby Lyngdoh Nongbet Best Coach. H Elias also took the Best School award.
