Shillong, Oct 14: The Meghalaya Squash Racket Association organised a one-day invitational tournament for World Squash Day on Saturday.
In support of the aim of expanding the sport, the MSRA invited players from Meghalaya and Assam for the tournament. It will also hold a coaching camp for children next month.
The tournament saw 21 men and women take part. The winner of the women’s category was Nandini Bayan, a 12-year-old prodigy and the runner-up was Chayanika Chankakoti. Both hail from Assam. The semifinalists were Prerna Jaswara and Pragya Choudhury from Meghalaya.
The winner of the men’s category was Sujal Pathak and the runner-up was Dikshanta KD Sharma from Assam. The semifinalists were Pawan Sharma of Meghalaya and Ishaan Jain of Assam.
This event did fulfil the objectives of World Squash Day, which was to open up the courts to new players and eventually get the youth interested in squash and make the next generation fitter and healthier, the MSRA said in a press release.
JR Marak, Deputy Director, Sports & Youth Affairs graced the occasion as the chief guest and distributed the prizes.
