Coronavirus forces suspension of U-23 inter-district cricket tourney in state

Shillong, Mar 17: The U-23 men’s Inter-District Cricket Tournament had to be postponed indefinitely after just four matches due to the coronavirus outbreak and the government’s moves to prevent its potential spread in Meghalaya.

Apart from the U-23 men’s tournament, there were also meant to be categories for U-16 boys, senior women and U-19 girls.

Four matches were held at two venues, at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills and Umbuda in Ri-Bhoi, in the U-23 men’s event.

The districts were divided into two zones – Zone 1 comprising North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, Tura District Cricket Association and West Khasi Hills and Zone 2 comprising Shillong Cricket Association, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, All Jaintia Hills and South West Khasi Hills.

Ri-Bhoi crushed All Jaintia Hills by 10 wickets, Tura beat North Garo Hills by four wickets, All Jaintia Hills bounced back to beat East Khasi Hills by 182 runs and East Garo Hills defeated South Garo Hills by five wickets.

In Mendipathar Meghalaya Cricket Association President Danny Marak and Joint Secretary Chiang Shira opened the tournament, while Vice-President Dipul Ryntathiang and Treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria opened the tournament in Umbuda in the presence of other dignitaries.
