Shillong, Sep 4: Preliminary designs have been completed for the upgrading of sports facilities at the JN Stadium here, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said yesterday on social media, and the tender for the work will be issued by the middle of next month.
“Have directed the department to present the final designs by this week and ensure that the stadium is inaugurated by August 2022,” he wrote.
The 2022 date is significant given that Meghalaya is meant to hold the National Games in that year. All infrastructure for the Games is meant to be ready at least one year prior to the event, which seems to suggest that the national sporting extravaganza will be pushed back.
In his Independence Day speech Sangma said that Rs 125 crore has been allocated for the JN Sports Complex work, with a similar amount earmarked for the PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura.
Late last month Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said that an indoor sports stadium built to “international standards” will come up in the Shillong sports complex.
