Shillong, May 4: Raj Kumar Sacheti (pictured centre), the Chairman of the games technical conduct committee for the National Games 2022, which is meant to be hosted by Meghalaya, lost his battle with Covid-19, it was reported today.
Sacheti was also the Executive Director of the Boxing Federation of India and the Associate Joint Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association. He had visited Shillong to inspect the progress of the 2022 Games’ preparations as recently as January last year.
His past appointments included a stint as special adviser for the 2016 South Asian Games (which Shillong co-hosted with Guwahati) and as India’s Deputy Chef de Mission for the 2018 Asian Games.
The Meghalaya State Olympic Association extended its condolences, with Working President John F Kharshiing saying, “We extend our prayers and sincere condolences to his family members. May almighty give his family peace and strength during this time of grief. He will be missed as he was a strong sports administrator. May his soul rest in peace.”
Boxing great MC Mary Kom paid her respects on social media, saying, “You are simple, humble, trustworthy. I will always hold you close in my thoughts. Your contribution and initiatives in sports fraternity will be always cherished.”
Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Kiren Rijiju, whose government has been blamed for the carnage that the Covid-19 pandemic is wreaking on India right now, said, “Our beloved RK Sacheti ji has lost the battle against Covid-19. He was one of the pillars who put India in the league of world’s top boxing nations. I wish he could see our boxers in the Olympics. I extend my condolences to his family for the monumental loss. His immense contribution to Indian sport will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace.”
