Shillong, Nov 13: Umtyrnga FC defeated Lamare FC 2-1 in the final of theĀ 1st Byrnihat Sports Association Open to All Knockout Football Tournament, held at Lumnongrim, Byrnihat, yesterday but the match was marred by violence directed towards the officials by a section of the crowd following the game.
Umtyrnga held a 1-0 lead at half time but Lamare equalised in the second via Remark Kharmalki only to see Umtyrnga retake the lead again a couple of minutes later through Max Wahlang.
Later, Lamare felt sure that Donlad Diengdoh had made it 2-2 but the goal was disallowed for offside. This and some other decisions appeared to have sent a section of spectators over the edge and they invaded the pitch following the final whistle. It is not known how many people were injured in the resulting melee (screenshot pictured), if any.
In the stands were Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun and half time extended to 45 minutes because of speeches made by these two dignitaries.
Individual awards were also handed out after the final. The Best Player was Stephan Pale of Lamare, Donbok Lyngdoh of Pahamsyiem was the Top Scorer and Pahamsyiem was the Best Disciplined Team. The Best Goalkeeper award went to that of Umtyrnga (name unknown).
