Shillong, Aug 22: Two martial artists from the Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya won medals at the recent IFMA Youth World Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia earlier this month.
In all, five fighters from the state took part – Mary Christine Wriang, Alphonsa Wriang, Bansahnamkyrpang Warkhyllew, Eberest Lyngdoh and Naphilawanbet Nongspung.
“To be selected to represent the country is a big achievement for our Meghalaya athletes,” MTAM President Angelus Sun said at a press conference today where he was flanked by the five.
Mary Christine, participating in the 14-15 years 38kg category, won a silver and bronze medal, while Alphonsa, also 14-15 years 38kg category, secured a bronze.
Sun said that better sports infrastructure and government support will go a long way in developing more Muay Thai fighters and bringing further glory to Meghalaya.
