5th Meghalaya Games torch relay sets off from Shillong to Tura

Shillong, Jan 9: The torch relay for the 5th Meghalaya Games set off from Shillong today on its way to Tura, the host of the event.

The torch was handed over by Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri (who is also the ex-officio President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association) to Binningstar Lyngkhoi, famed long distance runner and current athletics coach.

The torch will travel to Jowai, Mairang, Nongstoin and Williamnagar before reaching Tura on 15th January, the start of the Games, which will be inaugurated by President of India Droupadi Murmu.

Also present at today’s function were Director of Sports & Youth Affairs Isawanda Laloo, Assistant Director Khroobok Passah and other officials from the department.

“The government is committed to ensure the success of this event and hope that it is one of the best,” Warjri said. “Through this platform the government hopes that some of the athletes will shine in their respective disciplines and, in future, will participate in national and international events, like the Olympics.”
