Super Cup: Shillong Lajong bow out after third defeat

Shillong, Jan 20: Shillong Lajong FC’s campaign in the Super Cup ended on a third and final defeat in Bhubaneshwar today as they were beaten 2-0 by Jamshedpur FC.

Lajong had previously lost to Kerala Blasters FC and NorthEast United FC. These first two losses meant that SLFC couldn’t progress to the semifinals. Nevertheless, it would’ve been nice to end the tournament with a point or even 3 but it wasn’t to be.

Today coach Bobby Lyngdoh Nongbet made two changes to his starting line-up, with Sangti Janai Shianglong replacing Kynsaibor Lhuid and Bishal Lama taking the place of Neithovilie Chalieu in goal. It was all even until stoppage time in the first half, when Jamshedpur took the lead through Mohammed Sanan (45’+1).

In the second half, Jamshedpur received a penalty in the 52nd minute, but they could not convert as Seiminlen Doungel, who had played for Lajong in the 2014-15 I-League, hit the crossbar.

Jamshedpur would ultimately double their lead in the 73rd minute through Thongkhosem Haokip and wrapped up all 3 points.

Lajong will now turn their focus back to the I-League, which will resume on 3rd February when they will face Inter Kashi at home. Although the Super Cup results have been a little disappointing, the Reds are having – by their standards – a good I-League as they are currently fifth in the table.

Shillong Lajong’s squad today:
Bishal Lama (GK), Ronney Kharbudon, Saveme Tariang, Kynsailang Khongsit, Daniel Goncalves, Sangti Janai Shianglong (sub Kongbrailatpam Manjit Sharma 90’+4), Hamedamanbha Wahlang (sub Ronaldkydon Lyngdoh Nonglait 74′), Renan Paulino de Souza, Pursunep (sub Abdou Karim Samb 46′), Wadajied Kynsai Ryngkhlem, Douglas Rosa Tardin (sub Laiwang Bohham 74′)
