Shillong, Mar 21: Meghalaya picked up three silver and five bronze medals in track and field events today at the 3rd North East Games in Nagaland but there was no increase in the gold medal count for a second day running, as of 8PM.
There was also a bronze each in table tennis and taekwondo, taking Meghalaya’s tally to 2 gold, 6 silver and 24 bronze medals. The state’s two gold medals came on Tuesday in track events.
The subsequent lack of gold has meant that Meghalaya has dropped from fourth position in the medals tally to sixth.
Nevertheless, while the hunt for the top of the podium continues, track and field proved to be the biggest boon today, with numerous silver and bronze medals.
In the high jump, Rinalis Ingti took silver and Sibilda Maring bronze in the women’s event, clearing 1.43m and 1.35m respectively, with their performances hampered somewhat by muddy conditions brought about by wet weather. In the men’s category, Primus Ronghi (1.82m) finished second and Pringchang N Sangma (1.78m) third.
In the 800m races, Skhemlang Suba (1 minute, 59.14 seconds) bagged silver and Eleven Dkhar (2:00.14) the bronze in the men’s event, while Glorify Kurbah (2:22.83) came third in the women’s.
Glorify and Eleven picked up a further bronze medal as part of the mixed 4x400m relay team. The other two in the team were Donbok Shabong and Ritina Hanse. They finished the race in a time of 3 minutes, 48.92 seconds.
Another bronze was won by Prithvi Dey in the men’s singles of table tennis. Mahi Karki also took bronze in the 48kg men’s category in taekwondo.
Boxing saw Bhalang Shadap win his last-four contest in the 67kg category and he will go for the gold tomorrow.
Meghalaya’s women’s team continued to make progress in basketball as they defeated Mizoram 57-22 to top their group.
In badminton Chirag Agarwal and Gitchiak Sangma lost their men’s doubles match to Lalrinmawma and Laldintluanga Tlau of Mizoram 21-16, 21-14 in one of the earliest results of the day.
Disappointingly, Meghalaya were unable to progress further into the football competition as the men’s team drew with Nagaland today.
