Shillong, May 1: Teams from Mawsynram won two titles today – the U-17 Girls Inter Cluster T20 Cricket Tournament 2024 and the corresponding U-15 Boys event, the latter played for the Benjamin Diengdoh Memorial Trophy.
Both tournaments were organised by the East Khasi Hills Cricket Association and played at the Shortimai Stadium in Smit.
In both finals, the Mawsynram teams were up against opposition from Sohra.
The girls’ match was played first and Mawsynram Pink Panthers won the toss and chose to bat but were dismissed for 72 in 17.4 overs. Eliza Lyngdoh top-scored with 17 from 19 balls and Libashisha Khongngain bagged 3/9 in 3 overs for Sohra Super Nova.
Libashisha also managed the high score in the Super Nova’s innings, with 13 from 22 balls, but her team were all out for 62 in 13.2 overs. Eliza Lyngdoh took 4/12 in 3.2 overs and she was named Player of the Match as well as Player of the Tournament.
Later, in the boys’ final, Mawsynram Cluster won the toss against Sohra (A) Cluster and batted first once again.
The Mawsynram boys put up a much more formidable 161/5 in 20 overs, thanks to a whopping great innings by Nangsan Kynter, who smashed 73 from a mere 31 deliveries. Bashaikupar Nongdhar largely escaped the big hits to return figures of 2/19 in 3 overs.
Nangsan also shone with the ball and claimed 4/9 in 2.3 overs as Sohra (A) were bundled out for 75 in 12.3 overs, giving Mawsynram victory by 86 runs. Nangsan was named Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament.
The distinguished guests on the final day were family members of the late Benjamin Diengdoh, officials of the Mawsynram Sports Association, East Khasi Hills Cricket Association and parents of the players.
