Shillong, Jul 1: Assam Rifles is hosting its first Sentinels of the North East Women Football Championship 2024, which began yesterday.
The league matches are taking place in Lokra, Sonitpur, Assam. The final will be in Laitkor on 13th July.
The tournament features seven teams, including the state teams from Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and the Director General Assam Rifles women’s football team, a press release said yesterday.
Assam Rifles beat Assam in the opening match yesterday.
Oinam Bembem Devi, Padma Shri, Arjuna Awardee and former captain of the Indian women’s national football team, was the star guest at the launch.
“This championship aims to promote women’s football in the region, foster teamwork and competition and empower women through sports,” the Assam Rifles press release stated.
