Shillong, Jul 30: Nongthymmai Raitnongkynrih SC and Madanrting SC each reached the quarterfinals of the Shillong Sports Association’s U-20 Fourth Division 2024 by winning their Round of 16 matches in contrasting fashions at First Ground, Polo here today.
Nongthymmai were up against Them Rangshken ACC in the first match of the day and full time ended 0-0. Nongthymmai then won the tense penalty shootout 7-6. This is the third pre-quarterfinal that has had to be settled by a tiebreaker.
Later, Madanrting won 3-1 against Mawphlang SC. Michael M Rajee scored the first and last goals of the game, in the 15th and 63rd minute. In between, team mate Bankyrshan Ryndong (36′) and Mawphlang’s Firstborn Synrem (45′) also found the back of the net.
Nongthymmai topped Group C and were the only team out of the 30 participants that reached 10 points. Them Rangshken, meanwhile, finished second in Group D with 7 points. Mawphlang finished first in Group F, while Madanrting were second in Group A.
Tomorrow will witness the last two pre-quarterfinals. In the first, at 1:30PM, Group D runners-up Laitumkhrah SC will face Group E runners-up Diengpasoh SC. Then, at 4PM, the second-placed sides of Group B and Group C, Mawpdang SC and Madan S&CC respectively, will vie for the last quarterfinal place.
