Shillong, Sep 14: Two goals in the dying minutes took Mawpat to a 2-1 victory against Umlyngka SC in the last Group B match of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
The other match of the day, in Group C, saw Mawkriah West SC nudge out Gorkha Association 1-0.
Chaster Makhroh (38′) provided Umlyngka the lead in the first half and his team held on to that lead all the way until the 81st minute when Batiplang Bamon scored his first and the tournament’s 150th goal of the season. That produced a huge roar from the crowd and it got even louder in the 85th minute when Dikorta Nongrum pulled off the winner.
Umlyngka needed to win to take second place, while victory for Mawpat took them to first place.
Group B is the first of the four groups to have completed their matches and Mawpat and second-placed Lumparing SC will move on to the quarterfinals.
Later, Mawkriah West claimed the win they needed to take provisional second place in Group C. Hosterfield Kharbudnah (45′) was responsible for the only goal of the contest.
Mawkriah West now have 9 points and are tied with Umpling SC but the latter have head-to-head advantage and a better goal difference. If Lawmali SC beat Umpling when they meet next week there would be three teams on 9 points each and goal difference would have to be used to separate them.
