Shillong, Sep 25: Tynring SC had it relatively easy but it was hard work for Umpling SC, though both emerged victorious from the last two remaining quarterfinals of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
Tynring sailed past Mawkriah West SC 3-1 while Umpling beat Sanmer SC 4-2 on penalties after regulation time ended 2-2.
Sanmer, who were second in Group D, took the lead twice against Group C winners Umpling. Babitbor Dorphang (26′) and Kenny Maxwell Syiem (87′) were Sanmer’s scorers. However, on both occasions, there was an Umpling player to equalise – Adonay Riwan (73′) and Larry Kupar Kharnaior (89′).
The game thus went straight to penalties (extra time only comes into play from the semifinals) and here Umpling held their nerve to win 4-2.
Later, Tynring went 3-0 up in the first half through Bankitlang Kharkongor (4′), Jesleyroy Mylliempdah (38′) and Commanding Swer (43′). A late goal by Edrickson Warjri (87′) was Mawkriah West’s only consolation.
Yesterday Mawryngkneng SC and Mawpat SC secured their places in the first semifinal.
Both semifinals will take place on 28th September – Mawryngkneng versus Mawpat first at 12:15PM followed by Umpling and Tynring at 3PM. Incidentally, all four clubs were their respective group winners.
By reaching the semifinals, all four have also secured promotion to next season’s Second Division. The bottom team in each group – Lapalang SC (Group A), Krang SC (Group B), Lumdiengjri SC (Group C) and Mawshbuit SC (Group D) – will be relegated to the Fourth Division. None of these teams managed a win this season.
