Shillong, Jan 26: The sixth edition of the Meghalaya Games concluded yesterday in Jowai, with East Khasi Hills crowned the overall champions with 381 medals over the week-long event, including 149 gold.

Present at the closing ceremony held at U Kiang Nangbah Stadium were Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, senior civil servants and Meghalaya State Olympic Association officials.

Overall champions EKH also bagged 105 silver and 127 bronze medals. Hosts West Jaintia Hill were in second place with 108 medals while Ri-Bhoi came third with 104.

This edition of the Games was the biggest ever in terms of numbers of athletes (3,500-plus) and disciplines (29, including demonstration sports). Seven deaf athletes took part shooting, the first time that disabled participants have been included.

“We’re proud to say we’re fit to host the National Games,” Dhar said, referring to Meghalaya’s aim to hold the national event in 2027. He added that the Sports & Youth Affairs Department has seen significant growth under the current government, with an increased budget and infrastructure development. The construction of the Mawkhanu football stadium, claimed to be India’s largest, will make Meghalaya the football capital of India, he boasted.

MSOA Working President John F Kharshiing highlighted the progress made by the Meghalaya Games, which have grown from featuring 14 disciplines in 2020 to 23 disciplines in 2024 and now 25 disciplines plus four demo sports in 2025.
