Shillong, Jul 14: A total of 877 athletes took part in trials conducted by the Meghalaya Athletics Association to select its contingent for the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host.
The MAA held trials at three locations on different days – Wahiajer for Jaintia Hills, Shillong for Khasi Hills (including Ri-Bhoi) and Tura for Garo Hills.
The last of these, in Tura, was held at the Pa Togan Nengminja Athletics Stadium on Saturday where 429 athletes (343 male, 86 female) appeared. Twenty-seven technical officials oversaw the process. MAA officials Pleasantly Synnah, Patrick Lamare and Saljagring Marak (who is also the West Garo Hills District Sports Officer) were also present.
In Shillong there was a turnout of 309 athletes (232 male, 77 female), while Wahiajer saw 139 (112 male, 27 female).
In Tura Marak promised to reward Garo athletes who win a medal at the 2027 Games with a scooty, MAA General Secretary Finely L Pariat informed on Monday.
The MAA will have a selection committee meeting this week to select the best athletes from the three selection trials to be part of the team preparation for the 39th National Games.
Shortlisted athletes will be announced thereafter.
