Shillong, Aug 13: Umrynjah fended off a challenge to win 2-1 against Nongumlong in the second quarterfinal of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2025 at the SSA Stadium at First Ground, Polo, here today.
However, Nongumlong then filed a protest regarding the eligibility of one of the Umrynjah players, so the result is in abeyance until the SSA meets to study the complaint.
There have been several protests over player eligibility in the SSA’s Fourth Division and Third Division this year. In fact, Nongumlong were on the receiving end of one such complaint and had to forfeit a match against Sanmer during the group stage.
On the pitch today, Umrynjah scored twice in the first half only for Nongumlong to give their fans hope with a second half goal. However, they were denied an equaliser (including once off the woodwork) despite several chances.
On their way to the quarters, Umrynjah won all of their group games (the only team to do so this season), coming out on top of Group B, while Nongumlong were the runners-up in Group A.
