Shillong, Apr 13: Sputnik CC defeated Royal CC by 38 runs in the final of the 1st Late PA Sangma Memorial T20 Tournament, organised by the Shillong Cricket Association, here today.

The final wasn’t particularly close but was still entertaining. The Royals started it well by winning the toss and they chose to field first.

Sputnik made good use of batting first to score at more than 8 an over for a total of 164/8 in 20 overs. Gurinder Singh, who had performed well for Meghalaya as a guest-professional in years gone by, swatted 64 from 37 deliveries, while Amiangshu Sen made 26 from 22. Among the bowlers, Bipin Kumar Ray (2/22 in 3 overs) and Dippu Sangma (2/25 in 4) returned the best figures.

Royal CC underperformed in the chase and were all out in 18 overs for 126. Raj Biswa’s 31 from 14 balls was the one notable knock. Gurinder bagged 2/14 in 3 overs and Nafees Siddique 2/16 in 3 as Sputnik won by 38 runs.

Gurinder was the Player of the Final and his team mate Swarajeet Das was the Player of the Tournament for scoring 298 runs and taking 10 wickets.

The tournament was supported by the PA Sangma Foundation and is named for the late former Chief Minister, MP and Lok Sabha Speaker. The champions received Rs 1 lakh as prize money, which was presented to them by James PK Sangma, the eldest son of PA Sangma, who is also the President of the Meghalaya Cricket Association.
