Shillong, May 23: Shillong Lajong FC will be involved in the final match of the Indian Football League 2025-26 season, against champions in the wings Diamond Harbour FC in Kalyani today. Kick-off will be at 6:30PM.
DHFC wrapped up the title a few days ago by drawing with Dempo SC. That makes today’s match versus Lajong inconsequential as far as the race to the top goes but it is still important to the Reds as their fight for second place continues.
As Sreenidi Deccan drew yesterday with Dempo, Lajong need at least a point from today to retake second place in the standings. In either case, second or third will still be Lajong’s best ever performance in an IFL (formerly I-League) season, a far cry from the bitter pill of relegation in 2009-10 and 2018-19.
What’s impressed Indian football aficionados even more is that SLFC have used the youngest squad and an all-Indian squad to get to the top of the IFL.
