Shillong, May 26: The under-construction Mawkhanu Football Stadium, which will be the biggest football ground in the country, will only be ready in the second half of 2028.
This was stated by Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar MLA, the Chairman of the State Assembly committee on government assurances.
The stadium is part of a wider sports complex but the stadium itself will be for football only and is expected to have a seating capacity of 40,000.
With a completion date of 2028, it won’t be ready for the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host, though whether it was ever in the plans for this event is unknown.
The committee assessed the stadium’s development and, according to Tongkhar, the project is making significant progress, with work reportedly on track with an investment of Rs 732 crore.
The committee members also visited the Water Sports Centre at Umtham and the tennis courts at Umsawli.
Umtham is emerging as Meghalaya’s premier whitewater adventure hub, known for river canoeing, kayaking and rafting. The state is building a Rs 21 crore, 14 acre dedicated canoe slalom course there to serve as a national training facility and boost adventure tourism.
