Shillong, Jul 5: The Meghalaya Veteran Table Tennis Association (MVTTA) conducted its yearly mega event, the 8th All Meghalaya Masters TT Team Championships to commemorate World Environment Day.

The eighth edition was held at the Polo Indoor Stadium here on Saturday. All table tennis players of yesteryear from different districts of Meghalaya participated.

There were eight teams given environmentally-themed names – Go Green, Stay Fit, Save Fuel, Swachh Bharat, Save Trees, Save Water, Save Earth and Protect Nature.

Save Trees won the trophy, led by Bruce Marak. His team mate Ratan Biswakarma beat Eros Kharshiing of Save Earth 3-0 in the final match to win the trophy, which led to an overall 3-2 win for Save Trees over Save Earth.

The other Save Trees members were Suraj Joshi, Kiran Thapa and Anand Kausal. Save Earth was led by Lamphrang L Nonglait and his team mates were Arup Nag, J Warbah, BR Dasgupta and Eros Kharshiing.

Nag, from Tura, was the star of the tournament, winning all his matches. He was adjudged Player of the Tournament. Meanwhile, Taraman Gurung, a renowned veteran paddler, was presented a special award for his exemplary contribution towards sports in general and table tennis in particular.

The prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Gideon Kharkongor, with Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander Laloo Hek the chief guest.
