Shillong, Aug 6: Fresh from their recent success in Kolkata, karatekas from the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) have travelled to New Delhi for the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship 2026, which will begin tomorrow.
The state contingent comprises 61 karatekas led by officials Arjun Sewa, Edwilbert K Nongkynrih, Pynhunlang Kharbuli and Sharai Nongneng Shanpru. The three-day championship will conclude on 9th August.
AMKA’s martial artists bagged 88 medals at the Indian Challenger Cup 2026 in Kolkata, which ended on 2nd August. This included 41 gold medals.
Out of the 61 karatekas who headed to New Delhi, 27 fall under the ‘Team Preparation Programme’ for the 39th National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host. Their participation forms part of the exposure camp sanctioned by the Meghalaya Department of Sports and Youth Affairs that is aimed at providing valuable competitive exposure and helping them prepare for the National Games.
In a release today AMKA extended its best wishes to all the karatekas and officials for a successful championship and hope they bring laurels to the state.
