Shillong, Aug 17: Meghalaya’s first-ever triathlon contingent won 5 medals at the National Age Group Triathlon Championship in Pune, with 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The championship, held across different age categories, was organised by the Indian Triathlon Federation on 15th and 16th August at the Balewadi Stadium, Pune.
Triathlon is a multi-disciplinary event where athletes compete against each other in swimming, cycling and running.
The Meghalaya Triathlon Association (MTA), which was formed only in June, fielded 12 athletes – five males and seven females – against triathletes from across the country.
The three silver medallists were Sumarbiang Mawlong, Ardonister Lyngdoh and Glareenda Louiza Wahlang. Balasiewdor Wahlang and Naphisabet Nongbet were the state’s bronze medallists.
Every other member of the Meghalaya squad finished also inside the Top 10 of their category. They comprised Ibankdup Nongbet (4th), Denise Tariang (4th), William K Sangma (4th), David Issacson Wahlang (5th), Willbornson Wahlang (6th), James K Lyngdoh (7th) and Meba Lyngdoh (10th).
“This is a proud and emotional moment for Meghalaya. Our athletes entered their first national competition with courage and determination and they have returned as winners. Their performances show the sporting potential that exists in our state. Every athlete in this team has contributed to this historic beginning,” said Rephica Pde, President of the MTA.
The association congratulated the entire contingent and thanked the coaches, support staff, families and well-wishers whose backing made the trip possible.
