Meghalaya Boxing Association pitches Rs 4 cr training centre to State Govt

Shillong, Oct 12: The Meghalaya Boxing Association has proposed for a dedicated boxing training centre in the state, pegged at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore.

Arts and Culture Ministers Sanbor Shullai received the proposal during a programme here last week and he said he would take the suggestion to the state government. The event was held to felicitate Meghalaya boxing great Torak Kharpran Sun, who is now training the country’s best boxers.

Torak was assistant coach of the Indian boxing team at the recently-concluded Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India earned three gold and three bronze medals in the ring at the Games – this was the country’s most successful performance in boxing at the continental event.

Shullai said he would discuss the training centre proposal with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, expressing optimism that the proposed facility could become a reality.

MBA technical director Larry Kharpran described his brother Torak’s achievement as a matter of pride for Meghalaya and stressed the importance of recognising and nurturing coaching talent from the state.

Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang also called for greater investment in local sports professionals. In an apparent dig at the government, he questioned the need to bring in coaches from outside when capable trainers were available within Meghalaya. The state government has been supporting state sports associations with funds in preparation for the 39th National Games (scheduled to be held in Meghalaya next year) and some of this money is to enable them to bring in outside coaches.

Recalling his coaching stint in Arunachal Pradesh, Torak said the lack of boxers and adequate training facilities had presented significant challenges. He credited the Sports Authority of India’s online coaching programme with helping him identify and train young boxers.

Representatives of the MBA, Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun, Green Heart Boxing Club and Noble Art Boxing Club attended the programme, along with family members and well-wishers.
