Shillong, Oct 12: Meghalaya mountaineer Wallambok Lyngdoh has summitted Mt Bhagirathi II, a 6512m peak in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand.
This was announced by the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) today. Lyngdoh is the General Secretary of the association.
“This remarkable achievement marks his 18th successful summit out of 25 mountaineering expeditions … reflecting his dedication, perseverance, courage and passion for mountaineering,” MeSCMA said. “It is a moment of immense pride for the association and the people of Meghalaya, as he proudly hoisted the MeSCMA flag, the Meghalaya government flag and tributes to the freedom fighters of Meghalaya on this challenging Himalayan peak.”
Mt Bhagirathi II is one of the magnificent peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Located in the Gangotri Glacier, the source region of the Bhagirathi River, which forms part of the Ganga river system, it is renowned for its dramatic rock faces, steep snow slopes, glaciers and challenging high-altitude terrain.
For mountaineers, climbing Bhagirathi II is more than a physical challenge. It is a test of endurance, technical skill, mental strength, teamwork and the ability to make sound decisions in an unforgiving mountain environment, MeSCMA said.
The first ascent was recorded in 1933 by Austrian climbers Edi Ellmauthaler and Toni Messner. Subsequent expeditions explored different faces and ridges of the mountain, adding to its reputation as a demanding Himalayan climbing objective.
