Shillong, Oct 14: In a big vote of confidence for Meghalaya, the 5th KIO North East Zone Karate Championship 2026 will be held in Shillong from 22nd to 24th October.
The championship is organised by the Karate India Organisation (KIO), hosted by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) and supported by the Meghalaya government’s Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. The three-day event will be held at the Convocation Hall of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong.
The prestigious zonal championship will bring together karatekas from around the North East India, providing a massive platform for young and aspiring karatekas to demonstrate their skills, competitive spirit, discipline and sportsmanship.
The event is expected to witness 899 athletes, coaches, referees and team officials representing the regional states at the grand competition.
The championship aims to promote and strengthen the sport of karate in the North East, encourage sporting excellence among young athletes and provide them with valuable exposure to a competitive environment at the zonal level. It will also serve as an important opportunity for athletes to assess their performance and prepare for higher-level competitions, such as the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya will host next year.
AMKA karatekas have brought laurels to the state on numerous occasions over the years at regional, national and international tournaments. Top karatekas from Meghalaya are expected to participate next week and will seek to replicate some of the terrific success they have had elsewhere on home turf, supported by friends, family and well-wishers.
