Shillong, Oct 13: Shillong will host the senior women’s football teams of India, Iran and Nepal in a Tri-Nations Tournament later this month, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla informed today.
The tournament, organised at the invitation of the All India Football Federation, will see three matches played at the JN Stadium, all kicking off at 6PM – India vs Iran on 21st October, Iran vs Nepal on 24th October and India vs Nepal on 27th October.
The Indian women’s team will arrive in the city on 17th October, followed by Iran on 19th October and Nepal on 22nd October.
TSR had heard about the likelihood of holding this tournament here back in June but it was confirmed only a few days ago, Shylla said.
This international tournament follows on from the AFC Asian Cup qualifier between India and Bangladesh in March, which followed on from the India-Maldives friendly. Since then, the JN Stadium also hosted several matches of the 134th Durand Cup 2025.
Several meetings have been held bringing together representatives of the Meghalaya Football Association and state government and Shylla said that he is “quite confident” that this tri-nations event will also be a success. He further encouraged football fans of the state to make the tournament a success with their presence at the ground.
