Shillong, Feb 20: Meghalaya bagged their second win in a row by defeating Nepal 3-2 in their second match of the U-21 Dr T Ao Football Tournament in Guwahati today.
Having won their opening fixture yesterday against Tripura 2-1, the Meghalaya boys were upbeat right from the start and made every chance count against the neighbouring country’s team.
The first goal resulted from a Figo Syndai assist, which Robert Khongjoh tapped into the net in the 20th minute.
Nepal, however, equalised before half time by beating Meghalaya goalkeeper Frolicson Dkhar to make it 1-1.
An exciting second half was had, with Meghalaya regaining the lead in the 72nd minute. This came about when Pyndap Kharmawphlang played a deep penetration pass for Syndai, but his shot was blocked by the opposing goalie and it was Shaibor Nongrum who was on hand to score off the rebound.
Syndai would not be denied later on, though, when he put his side 3-1 up. Nepal did get another goal, but this was so late in the game that they didn’t have enough time to look for an equaliser.
Meghalaya will next take on Nagaland tomorrow at 4:30PM. Victory will give the boys a real shot at qualifying for the semifinals.
