Shillong, Oct 18: Langsning hammered Nangkiew Irat 6-2 in the Shillong Premier League at the JN Stadium here today.
In the first leg these teams had played out a goalless draw on 29th August.
Today Mediphrangki Pohleng scored a brace in the 17th and 43rd minutes. Substitutes Hamboy Lyngdoh (53’, 62’) and Rimitre Thma (68’) added three more goals in the second half.
Nangkiew then got two goals back through Shano Tariang (75’) and Banshan Nongdhar (77’) before Kitboklang Pale scored the final Langsning goal in stoppage time.
Langsning almost equalled their entire season’s worth of goals in this one match, having scored seven in their last seven outings. Incidentally, Pohleng, Lyngdoh, Thma and Pale all found the back of the net for the first time in SPL 2019.
Desperate to claw their way out of the relegation zone, defending champions Langsning got the lead when Pohleng headed the ball home following a Pale corner kick. Pohleng scored his second via a header as well, this time with Thma being the provider off another set-piece.
Leading 2-0 going into the second half, one didn’t expect too much in the way of goals given that neither side have been proficient scorers this season, but the spectators were in for a surprise.
Lyngdoh got the first of his goals via a Pale cross and his second nine minutes later after a delightful through ball by Thma.
Thma then headed in another goal to put Langsning 5-0 up. Nangkiew, however, tried to fight back with a Damehun Syih header striking the bar and bouncing down still in play though Nangkiew thought it might have crossed the goal line.
Tariang then pulled one back for Nangkiew after desperate attempts by Langsning to prevent the goal before Nongdhar slammed in a perfectly-taken free-kick two minutes later.
Nangkiew continued to press high in search of more goals, but that opened up a way for Pale to mount a swift counterattack in the second minute of stoppage time.
The victory, only their second this season, takes Langsning to third position with 10 points, in front of Ryntih (also 10 points) on head-to-head. This was Nangkiew’s third successive defeat and second straight four-goal loss after losing to Rangdajied United 5-1 last weekend. They are now in the relegation zone in sixth place (8 points).
Tomorrow Nongrim Hills are scheduled to face Laban at 3PM.
