Shillong, Nov 1: Meghalaya defeated Mizoram by an innings and 22 runs in their U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy plate group match in Golaghat, Assam, today.
Nirdesh Baisoya was the star with the ball, taking 9/36 for Meghalaya across two innings.
Meghalaya won the toss on the first day yesterday and put Mizoram in to bat first.
Mizoram were skittled for just 41, with Baisoya claiming 4/11. Gagandeep Singh (2/3), Bharat Gurung (2/7), Avinash Rai (1/0) and Himanshu Yadav (1/14) were the other wicket-takers.
Meghalaya did not have the best time with the bat either, being dismissed for 137. Captain-Wicketkeeper Mrityunjay Bharali was the top-scorer with 39 as Meghalaya took a 96-run first innings lead.
Baisoya was given the new ball in Mizoram’s second innings and used it to claim the wicket of opener Shivam Kumar for 15. His other wickets were of batsmen lower down the order and he finished with figures of 5/25. Gurung, meanwhile, took 3/7 and Magotra 2/24. Magotra was responsible for removing Mizoram’s top scorer – Swapnanil Sen (36) – and that enabled Meghalaya to bowl out their opponents for 74 to win by an innings.
