Shillong, Nov 6: One of Meghalaya’s top teenaged karatekas, Wandahunshisha Mawblei, has left to join the Indian national team that will take part in the 5th South Asian Karate Championship, which will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 7th to 9th November.

Mawblei left for Dhaka via Guwahati and Kolkata today morning.

Mawblei will participate in the girls’ cadet (14-15 years) individual kumite (-54kg) division. She was selected for the national team based on her performance at the Karate Association of India Cadet, Junior & U-21 National Karate Championship earlier this year, the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association said in a press release.

That event was held in Guwahati in April and Mawblei won a bronze medal in a highly competitive field. She was the only Meghalaya karateka to win a medal at the championship.

Last year Mawblei won gold at the North East Karate Championship and silver at the KAI nationals.

Meanwhile, another Meghalayan – state coach Donboklang Lyngdoh – will also be heading to Bangladesh as he has been appointed as national assistant coach for the championship. Lyngdoh left for the championship with Mawblei today.
