Shillong, Jan 30: Meghalaya must start construction work on National Games infrastructure by June if it is to be able to hold the event in 2022, the scheduled year, Indian Olympic Association official RK Sacheti (second left) said here today.

Sacheti, the Chairman of the IOA’s coordination commission for the National Games 2022, was on an inspection of the proposed sites today spoke to the press after meeting with Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh and officials of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.

With just two years to go time is running out for Meghalaya to construct the necessary stadiums and games village. Existing infrastructure will have to be heavily renovated, like the JN Stadium, which Sacheti visited today. Asked how many football matches have taken place at the stadium, which is a venue for the ongoing Junior National Football Championship, Sacheti was reportedly told that the figure is more than 10,000.

Today Sacheti also visited the proposed site for the games village in Umsawli, where he had to walk the final 1km because there is no road to the site.
