Shillong, Nov 10: Niaw Wasa’s run in the inaugural Futsal Club Championship came to an end in New Delhi today after they were beaten by home side Delhi FC 15-4 in the last round of group matches.
Niaw Wasa went into the contest with four points to Delhi’s seven and the Jowai team had to win the match in order to take first place in Group C and thus a place in the semifinals.
Delhi took the lead but Primrose Lamat (9′) equalised. However, Delhi found the lead again soon after but, yet again, Niaw Wasa equalised, this time with Riburom Jat (15′) levelling proceedings. Delhi were then given a real scare with Civility Khongmalai (20′) giving Niaw Wasa a 3-2 lead but it didn’t last long before Delhi equalised.
Early in the second half the hosts edged their noses in front once again via a penalty and, following that, they ran riot, scoring almost at will, as Niaw Wasa broke down under the pressure. Lamat (37′) pulled one back for the Meghalaya side but that hardly bothered Delhi, who had celebrated 16-6 and 13-1 victories in their previous two outings.
Despite not being able to qualify for the last-four, Niaw Wasa had a great run in the competition, which they qualified for by winning the first Meghalaya State Futsal League last month.
