Shillong, Jul 26: Ricky John Shabong has signed for Punjab FC for the 2023 Indian Super League, it has been confirmed.
Shabong had been with ATK Mohun Bagan (now known as Mohun Bagan Super Giant) since leaving the Indian Arrows setup in 2021-22.
However, he was loaned out that season to Rajasthan United, for whom he played 17 matches in the I-League that year. That was the most game time he had in a single year, having played 12 I-League games for Indian Arrows in 2020-21 and 16 in 2019-20.
Last season he was back with Bagan and made just one brief ISL appearance as a two-minute substitute.
It was during his time at Indian Arrows, which was an All India Football Federation development team, that he played in the national sides from the U-14 to U-20 levels, representing the nation on numerous occasions.
The 20-year-old midfielder now joins Punjab, who have gained promotion from the I-League to the ISL for the upcoming season. There he will play with fellow Meghalayan Samuel Lyngdoh Kynshi, who had earlier been snapped up by the club.
