Shillong, Jul 22: Mawpdang SC jumped up to second place in Group B of the Shillong Sports Association’s U-20 Fourth Division 2024 by beating leaders Umiew Maw U Sam SC 3-0 at First Ground, Polo here today.
The other matches today witnessed Madanrting SC and Umrynjah SC play out a 2-2 draw in Group A before Lumkseh SC claimed their first win with a 1-0 result over Risa Colony SC in Group E.
Umiew Maw U Sam had already guaranteed themselves first place in Group B before today, so had little to play for. Mawpdang needed the win to displace New Challenger SC and did so with goals from Samborlang Langte (16′, 70’+2) and Pyntiplang Syiem (36′). New Challenger should still progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
Later, Lumkseh pipped Risa Colony after Banteinam Khonglam (35’+1) scored the only goal of their contest. Risa Colony still stay in second place but could lose that position to Riatsamthiah SC when the latter play their last group match on Wednesday.
In the first match of the day, Madanrting and Umrynjah each held the lead for a while before points were shared in their 2-2 draw.
Madanrting got their noses out in front first with a 26th minute goal by Michael Rajee. In the second half Umrynjah came back into the match through Wanboklang L Nongbri (53′) and Bashemphang Nongkhlaw (63′) but their lead lasted just two minutes before Sparlington Thongni (65′) levelled proceedings once again.
Madanrting, Umrynjah and Thynroit SC all have 8 points each in Group A. Head-to-head cannot separate these teams as all the matches between them were draws. Thynroit, though, have the best goal difference of the trio, while Madanrting have scored more goals than Umrynjah.
