Shillong, May 1: A send-off for the Meghalaya contingent for the 7th Khelo India Youth Games 2025 was held here today.

There are 44 athletes and 14 officials who will make up Team Meghalaya in this year’s edition of the national youth event, which will be held in Bihar (with a few disciplines also in Delhi) from 4th to 15th May. Nearly 10,000 athletes from 36 states and Union territories are set to compete in the Youth Games.

The state government’s official press release didn’t specifically mention the disciplines that Meghalaya will be participating in but we’ve learnt that they are football, archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, shooting and swimming. In 2024 Meghalaya took part in just one event, men’s football, and won gold. The football team received direct entry but the other Meghalaya participants are wild cards.

At the same function, the state government awarded sports scholarships to 614 athletes under the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme for 2022-24 and 2024-25.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma encouraged the Khelo India athletes to give their best and work hard.

Other dignitaries present included Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, Sports & Youth Affairs Joint Secretary Richard Yanthan, Sports & Youth Affairs Director DD Shira and Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F Kharshiing.
