Shillong, Sep 28: Mawryngkneng SC defeated Mawpat SC 2-0 in the first semifinal of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
Mawryngkneng will thus meet Umpling SC, who beat Tynring SC in the second semi, in the final on 2nd October.
After a goalless first half, Sanlangki Marboh netted the opening goal with a direct free-kick in the 50th minute.
The game didn’t appear as if it would have many goals in it and Mawryngkneng put on a display of time wasting after that but when they had the opportunity to go 2-0 up they didn’t waste it.
A cross to Banker Mynsong (pictured second left) saw the Mawpat goalkeeper come out but he was beaten to the ball and the No. 10 negotiated the presence of a defender as well as the high bounce to score into what was an open net in the 78th minute.
Both teams had been undefeated in the group stage – Mawryngkneng in Group A and Mawpat in Group B. When it came to the quarterfinals a few days ago, Mawryngkneng had pipped Lumparing SC, while Mawpat required penalties to get past Kharang SC.
