Shillong, Feb 13: The fourth edition of the Assam Rifles Sentinels Cup will be back from 17th to 27th February in Shillong.

The tournament, named after Assam Rifles’ moniker, ‘Sentinels of the North East’, has seen numerous teams from across the region battle it out for the glory of bagging the trophy.

The Sentinels Cup will see a wide representation from clubs hailing from Meghalaya, as well as Assam Rifles, Indian Army and Meghalaya Police. The tournament will feature eight teams each in the men’s and women’s categories who will compete through group stages, followed by knockout rounds.

The grand opening is scheduled for 17th February at First Ground, Polo, from 2PM. The final will also take place at the same venue 10 days later and the champions of the tournament will take home a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.

The Assam Rifles sees this tournament as being in line with its mission to promote sports, engage the youth of the North East and motivate them to steer clear of insurgency and drugs, according to a press release today.

The Assam Rifles is committed to nurturing football talent through its agreement with the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Academy and Assam Rifles Public School (Sports), which actively works to tap into the potential of the region’s young footballers. The tournament’s partnership with Khelo India Abhiyan and the Fit India Movement only strengthens its role as a catalyst for positive change in the region, the release added.
