Shillong, Apr 6: Sethu FC of Tamil Nadu secured their place in the semifinals of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) with a 3-1 victory over Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education (IGASE) at the JN Stadium here today.
The other match of the day saw India Rush get their first point in the competition’s first goalless draw against Gokulam Kerala. India Rush had lost all of their previous four games.
Skipper and ace forward Indumathi put Sethu ahead in the 26th minute after a pass came in from Geethanjali, but Pradeepa Sekar levelled for IGASE eight minutes later as the teams went into half time at 1-1.
Bangladeshi recruit Sabina Khatun, who has had a spectacular run in the tournament so far, scored twice in the space of eight minutes – Indumathi assisting on both occasions – to seal the deal for Sethu FC who are firmly placed in second spot on 12 points, just one behind leaders and defending champions Eastern Sporting Union, who they’ll face on Sunday in their final league stage game.
Meanwhile the other game ended completely goalless even though Gokulam dominated proceedings. Ugandan forward Ikwaput Fazila was the main threat for the Kerala team, but she couldn’t make good on the opportunities she had.
