Shillong, Sep 26: Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) Working President John Kharshiing (pictured centre) has resigned from his post in a letter dated 21st September, it was revealed to the press yesterday.
In the letter addressed to the MSOA President and Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, Kharshiing said he was resigning “with immediate effect” because he is no longer an office bearer of the Meghalaya Boxing Association after it elected new office bearers on 14th July.
It is a requirement of the MSOA constitution that its senior members be associated with a recognised sports association.
Incidentally TSR had overheard something said on the matter of Kharshiing’s resignation yesterday afternoon during the Shillong Premier League match between Rangdajied United and Meghalaya Police.
Sitting behind TSR’s reporter was another MSOA official who said that it was a senior member of the Olympic Association, Bor Diengdoh, who brought up the matter of the unconstitutionality of Kharshiing continuing as Working President. He then went on to describe the resignation as bad for the MSOA as it was Kharshiing who had pushed so hard for Meghalaya bidding to hold the National Games in 2022.
In his resignation letter Kharshiing said, “I wish the MSOA all success in its endeavour towards the National Games 2022 to be hosted by Meghalaya and assure the MSOA of my continued support towards the upliftment of sports and youth affairs in the state of Meghalaya.”
