Shillong, Aug 19: Experienced defender Aiborlang Khongjee has joined Rangdajied United for the Shillong Premier League 2019.
Khongjee, a former India international, has played for various clubs across the country, namely Shillong Lajong, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United, Mumbai City and ATK.
The 31-year-old hasn’t been seen much on the pitch in the last two seasons of the Indian Super League. Due to injury he missed out in 2017-18 while at Mumbai City and he was only given seven games at ATK last season.
He played his last competitive football match in Shillong on 30th April 2017 for Shillong Lajong against Aizawl FC.
Khongjee now returns to his home state towards the tail-end of his career and his inclusion should add a bit of sparkle to Rangdajied’s squad, at least on paper.
Over the last few years Rangdajied have been, at best, runners-up, with their only SPL title coming all the way back in 2013.
Off the pitch, Khongjee was also a recipient of the U Kiang Nangbah Award, the highest recognition for a sportsperson in Meghalaya. He’ll be hoping for some more on-pitch recognition before hanging up his boots and Rangdajied might very well be the place where he earns it.
