Shillong, Oct 2: In order to mark the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Fit India Freedom Run was held today morning at the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura where enthusiast runners participated in the competition.

The programme was organised by West Garo Hills District Sports Office in collaboration with the Tura Runners Club and district administration.

Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh distributed the certificates and cash prizes to the winners of the Freedom Run.

The men’s category race was won by Witnar A Sangma, with Bethnar A Sangma and Puran Koch finishing second and third. The women’s race saw Smile Orchid Momin, Pragya Singh and Tensilchi B Marak come first, second and third respectively.

Certificates and cash prizes were also distributed for the Virtual Run 2020, where runners ran on their own because of the coronavirus pandemic and logged the distances they covered. Siljrang R Marak was first in the men’s category having run 400km, with Chimpu Sangma (355km) and Dylan Sangma (311km) second and third.

Pragya Singh took first in the women’s event by covering a distance of 268km, with Sierra Sangma runner-up with 136km and Smile Orchid Momin third with 125km.

An awareness message for the Drug Free India campaign was also delivered after the race, which was jointly organised by the Department of Social Welfare and district administration.
