Shillong, Apr 14: The government of Meghalaya has restricted the number of spectators at outdoor sporting events to 50% of capacity because of rising Covid-19 cases in the state once again.

This was ordered by Chief Secretary MS Rao yesterday evening. Fifty percent restrictions were also placed on cinemas, places of worship and religious/social/private gatherings. Shops, restaurants and bars within Shillong agglomeration will have to close by 9PM.

After dwindling to almost zero, active Covid-19 cases in Meghalaya now stand at 270, with 215 of these in East Khasi Hills alone. Yesterday 87 new infections in the state were reported, the highest single day figure in 2021.

“It is observed that SOPs (standard operating procedures) are not being followed strictly by all citizens. It may be noted that any complacency will lead to a surge in Covid-19 cases. Citizens are advised to exercise caution, follow all protocols and adhere to the SOPs to ensure that the state does not see a resurgence in cases,” Rao’s order stated.
