Shillong, Apr 20: With the spread of Covid-19 in East Khasi Hills threatening to get out of control, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has banned spectators from sporting events in the Greater Shillong area.

In this case Greater Shillong includes Shillong Municipal areas, Shillong Cantonment, Mawlai Community & Rural Development Block (including census towns), Mawpat C&RD Block (including census towns), Mylliem C&RD Block from Umshyrpi Bridge to 7th Mile, Upper Shillong (including Madanrting, Mawblei, Laitkor, Nongkseh, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun, Mawdiangdiang, Diengiong and Siejiong).

Sporting activities are permitted, “subject to SOPs (standard operating procedures) already issued,” the DC, Isawanda Laloo, said in her order.

This restriction on attendance at sports events is one of several issued for Greater Shillong, which has registered hundreds of Covid-19 cases this month. There were also restrictions placed on weddings, funerals, offices and restaurants, among others.

Six days ago the Meghalaya government took the decision to restrict the number of spectators at outdoor sporting events to 50% of capacity because of rising coronavirus cases. This restriction will continue (for now) outside Greater Shillong.
